Our building may be modern, but our church history dates back to February 18, 1883. It was through the prayers of many; and the hard work and vision of William A. Tennis that Hampton Christian Church became an organized mission located on Chapel Street. William Tennis, at that time, was a deacon of Grafton Christian Church in York County.
E.G. Bagby was called in 1887 as the first full time minister. On December 11,1888 the mission became fully and officially chartered as a church. Unfortunately, the first house of worship burned two years later, in l900.
Not to be discouraged, the church members built a new brick sanctuary which was dedicated on the 2nd Lord's Hampton Christian Church Day of September, 1901. That same building Chapel Street, 1885 was filled with praise and worship until 1974 when the congregation built and moved to the present church at 151 E. Mercury Boulevard in Hampton. The members have celebrated two additions to the building since that time.
There is currently a stained glass window in our sanctuary that reminds us of the Tennis family, their support even today, and the years of dedication of all of our members. Our written history, pictorial history, and original communion ware are available at the church for you to view. Come experience the wonderful heritage of this church as it continues to carry out its mission as a part of the Christian Chruch (Disciples of Christ).
